Feet in the water in Les Sables d'Olonne

During your stay in the Vendée, how about an introduction to fishing on foot!

Here, the locals have been doing it with passion for ages.

This custom has been passed down from generation to generation.

The pleasure of getting together with friends and family in beautiful places is cultivated. Nature is at the centre of all our attention.

But before you set off to discover this activity, let me act as your guide....

To fully experience this adventure, you must first check the tide times and then make sure that the tide is low.

To make sure you don't come back empty-handed and to fish in the best possible conditions, here is what you need to bring:

  • a bucket
  • a landing net for shrimps and crabs
  • a knife to detach the shellfish from the rock
  • boots or old shoes to put your feet in the water without cutting yourself
  • a cap, glasses and sun cream to protect yourself from UV rays

Good to know: Shovels or other such tools are not allowed for fishing on foot.

So you're all set.

Go for the bernacles, winkles, shrimps, clams and crabs!

Feet in the water in Les Sables d'Olonne

Let's go, towards Les Sables d'Olonne

The commune of Les Sables d'Olonne is perfect for this, as it has several beaches that are accessible and perfect for fishing on foot. First, there is the Granges beach, then the Paracou beach and finally the Tanchet beach.

If we have to choose one spot, we would recommend the Paracou beach.

A real favourite! A postcard setting and a fabulous place for children to swim in the small natural pools.

Arm yourself with your best landing net and go in search of the little crustaceans and molluscs that are hiding under your feet. What will you find?

Enjoy the fresh air and the salty smell of the tide for a morning.

After a good time together, you can take your treasure back to the campsite.

Note: be careful not to be too greedy, as a maximum of 5 kg per family is allowed, which will be more than enough to satisfy your hunger.

It's time to get down to business and entrust this task to a reliable cook (we're joking, nothing could be easier to prepare than our succulent seafood).

To enjoy this precious booty you will find countless recipes, but in our opinion the simplest ones are also the tastiest...

To finish this half day with your feet in the water, you can head to the large embankment of Les Sables d'Olonne and have a drink in one of the many cafés, with the magnificent view of the sea. If it's time for a snack, you can also try the ice cream shop at the foot of the Grande Horloge, the ice creams are delicious, nothing like it with a beautiful sun.
